Improving safety, productivity and reliability with Norphonic VoIP mining telephones

Konkola Copper Mine (KCM), one of Zambia’s largest copper mines, needed a reliable communication system 875 metres underground to support a new high-speed railway and increase production.

Norphonic VoIP mining telephones were installed along the railway and in control rooms above and below ground. Connected via fibre-optic networks, the system enables reliable communication between miners, locomotive drivers and control room operators.

Designed for harsh mining conditions, the phones feature automatic fault monitoring, flashing light indicators, water resistance and remote maintenance.

The results: Improved worker safety, fewer communication-related interruptions, higher system uptime and reduced costs through the integration of IT and telecommunications networks.
